Dentist Michael B. Smith D.M.D.
Dr. Michael B. Smith has spent over 20 years in clinical practice, caring for patients from as young as age two through adulthood. Over time, his perspective on dentistry has evolved beyond just treating teeth. He has come to see oral health as deeply connected to how the entire body functions—especially when it comes to breathing, sleep, and overall wellness.
That understanding became deeply personal through his own experience as a father. Dr. Smith has two daughters, and when his oldest was around five or six years old, he began noticing signs that didn’t seem typical—restless sleep, frequent tossing and turning, night sweats, and even night terrors. He also noticed changes in her dental development, including rotated and crowded lower front teeth. At the time, he had been introduced to airway dentistry concepts, but hadn’t yet fully connected how significant they could be.
That experience pushed him to dig deeper. Rather than taking a “wait and see” approach, he chose to act early. At age five, his daughter began treatment with a habit-correcting appliance (Orthotain, now known as Healthy Start). What happened next had a profound impact on him, both as a father and as a clinician. Within about 7 to 10 days, her night terrors, night sweats, and restless tossing and turning stopped. She had previously been mouth breathing, and that began to resolve as well. Within a month, he began to see visible changes in her dental development, including her lower front teeth starting to naturally straighten.
Seeing these changes firsthand shifted Dr. Smith’s entire perspective. It reinforced for him that many of the issues he was seeing in both children and adults were not isolated dental problems, but part of a bigger picture involving airway, breathing, and development.
From that point forward, Dr. Smith committed to a more comprehensive, airway-centered philosophy—one focused on identifying and addressing root causes rather than simply managing symptoms. He believes that many dental and health concerns are connected to how we breathe, sleep, and grow.
A big part of his approach is education. Dr. Smith believes patients and parents deserve to understand what’s happening and why it matters. His goal is not just to treat, but to guide and empower people to make informed decisions that can improve their long-term health.
He is especially passionate about early intervention in children, helping support proper growth, development, and airway function. At the same time, he works with adults who are struggling with poor sleep, fatigue, and chronic health concerns that may be linked to airway issues.
Dr. Smith also values a collaborative approach to care. He frequently works alongside myofunctional therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to create more complete and lasting outcomes for his patients.
He has completed over 100 hours of advanced training in airway-centered dentistry and is a Certified Healthy Start Provider, Vivos Provider, Invisalign and Candid Pro Provider, and Preventive Oral Device Provider. He is also honored to have received the Mayor of Clarksville, Tennessee Achievement Award.
At the core of everything he does is a simple goal: to help people live healthier lives. For Dr. Smith, that means going beyond the smile—helping patients breathe better, sleep better, and ultimately feel better every day.
